April – 50 Yard Bench Match – Open and Peep Sights

The 50 Yard Bench Match is typically held on the first Sunday of April.  This match is shot from the Bench and the target is placed at the 50 yard mark.  The 6 bull target is used, one practice bull and 5 scoring bulls.  2 shots on each of the scoring bulls.  A larger bull target is used for the Open match and the smaller target is used for the Peep match.

Here is a list of the  basic rules for this match:

  • All age-appropriate matches.
  • 10-shots at a Six-Bull Target.
  • Open and peep sight classes. Peep target can be shot with either peep or open sights.
  • If shooting both open and peep, you must mark the targets before shooting.
  • Need bench ML rifle.
  • Cost: $10 for Open and $10 for Peep
  • Gemmer Member Only pay and win prizes. Guest/Visitors shoot for free.
  • Prizes: Plaques for Top 3 places – Open & Peep

When shooting from the bench, you setup a gun rest at the end of the bench to rest the barrel or stock while shooting.  The butt of the gun can not rest on a bag or the bench.  The stock needs to be supported by the shooter.

Shooter can compete in both the open and peep sight matches.  A peep sight rifle is optional for the peep sight match.  Some shooters will try to shoot the peep sight match with an open sight rifle and that is acceptable.  If you are shooting in both matches you must pay the $10 fee for each match.  Targets must be identified before the matches begin as either a Peep target or a Open sight target.  Typically shooters that are shooting both matches will place both targets out at the same time so that they can shoot some of the 2nd target before the 2nd round of shooting begins.  Our club typically starts the first round at 10am and the 2nd round begins once all shooters have completed their targets.  This means that the 2nd round would start at about 11:30am-11:45am.
